Hair loss affects millions of both men and women around the world. While it is not a life-threatening condition, hair loss does harm self-esteem and confidence. Fortunately, with better medical technology and research, there are more ways to treat hair loss. Here are some of the top hair loss treatments available in 2024.
Non-Surgical Hair Loss Treatments
If you believe that surgery is the only option for treating hair loss in men and women, think again. Today’s hair loss treatments also can be non-surgical and non-invasive. Here are some of the most effective and popular options we offer at our Washington state clinics.
PRP Therapy
One of the more innovative hair loss treatments is platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. This procedure involves taking a blood sample from the patient, isolating the platelets in a lab centrifuge and then injecting them into the scalp. The growth factors naturally present in the platelet-rich plasma stimulate the hair follicles. Hair regrows and is fuller and healthier overall.
PRP therapy is performed right in the office. It is comfortable and quick. It requires little to no downtime. So, PRP therapy is really convenient for our patients who have busy schedules. Results happen within a few months after the initial treatment.
Low-Level Laser Therapy
Another non-invasive hair loss treatment we offer is low-level laser therapy (LLLT). LLLT uses high-tech devices to apply red light to the scalp. The low-frequency light increases cellular activity in the hair follicles. Increased hair growth and thickness result.
LLLT treatments are painless and can be done at home with a portable device, such as the LaserCap. They help both men and women. Results can usually be seen within months of consistent use.
ACell
For selected patients, ACell solution may be added to platelet-rich plasma regimen. ACell is what experts call an “extracellular matrix.” Combined with PRP therapy injections, ACell stimulates hair growth in individual follicles.
Topical Hair Restoration Treatments
There are several topical medications which treat hair loss. These include Minoxidil and Finasteride. Patients apply them right to the scalp.
Also, some patients choose natural remedies such as essential oils, herbal supplements and specialized shampoos. At our hair restoration clinics, we offer Help Hair Whey Protein Shakes. These drinks contain biotin and amino acids which, when added to a healthy diet, help restore hair’s strength and fullness naturally.
Lifestyle Changes
In addition to these hair loss treatments, certain lifestyle changes can impact hair health. Reducing stress levels, eating a balanced diet and avoiding damaging hairstyles or heat styling improve hair growth and texture.
Surgical Treatments
When non-invasive treatments are not an option or do not work for the patient, the hair restoration physician may advise FUE or FUT surgeries.
FUT, or Follicular Unit Transplantation, involves removing a strip of hair from a specific donor area of the patient’s scalp. The hair loss doctor transplants it onto the balding areas.
FUE, or Follicular Unit Extraction, involves removing individual hair follicles one by one from the donor area. The hair loss physician then places them into the thinning portions of the scalp.
Both of these hair restoration surgeries have specific benefits and risks. For instance, the FUE procedure creates less noticeable scalp scarring. It also features quicker return to normal activities after the surgery.
The more invasive FUT surgery has improved over the years. It delivers more natural-looking outcomes. However, FUT does feature longer recovery times than the FUE procedures.
Deciding to have hair transplant surgery and which kind is best is up to the individual patient and the hair loss doctor. As with all hair loss procedures, our hair loss surgeries are medically safe. They are tailored to patient health needs, preference and potential for successful results.
